Guillotine Shears in Steel Structure Fabrication

Steel structure fabrication depends on heavy plate cutting, and the guillotine shear remains the most efficient tool for straight-line cutting of plate up to 40 mm thick. In beam and column fabrication, shear cut plates feed into drilling, welding and assembly operations that require square, distortion-free edges.

The demands of structural steel are different from general fabrication. Plate is supplied in large dimensions and often in high-strength grades, which places heavy loads on the shear’s frame, blades and hold-down system. Machines built for structural applications feature heavy welded frames, long cutting lengths of 3 to 6 meters and high tonnage ratings to handle the strongest grades.

Squareness is a critical parameter in structural work. A shear with an accurate back gauge and parallel blade adjustment ensures that cut plates are perfectly square, which is essential for welded connections and bolted joints in structural assemblies. CNC controls allow operators to program repetitive cutting patterns for mass production of standard components.
